Advanced MLD and Modalities

The course is designed for clinicians with prior lymphedema coursework and clinical experience treating patients with lymphedema and lymphatic diseases.  The education will uncover advanced MLD techniques and modalities that maximize edema reduction and pain, restore functional movement, and aims to achieve the highest quality of life for individuals living with lymphedema. Material covered will include case studies, unilateral and bilateral MLD sequences, NPT (negative pressure therapy), vibration, US (ultrasound), LLLT (low-level laser therapy), kinesiology taping, and scar management.
8 contact hours (0.8CEUs)

Course Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the foundational principles of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and differentiate between three clinically recognized MLD techniques, demonstrating knowledge of their indications and therapeutic mechanisms.
  2. Identify and explain at least four precautionary conditions and four contraindicated comorbidities, demonstrating the ability to recognize clinical red flags and the need for interdisciplinary referral prior to initiating Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in performing two unilateral and two bilateral MLD sequences tailored to optimize lymphatic flow and promote decongestion in the upper and lower extremities.
  4. Apply three deep tissue fibrosis reduction techniques to improve integumentary health and lymphatic mobility with appropriate clinical rationale.
  5. Integrate critical thinking in the selection of adjunctive modalities during MLD treatment, ensuring safe and evidence-informed decision-making to enhance functional outcomes and quality of life (QOL) for individuals with lymphedema.
  6. Design and implement an individualized MLD treatment plan based on a complex case study, demonstrating clinical reasoning, sequencing strategies, and outcome-based goal setting
